To Mom, With Love

I've loved these photos my whole life and was finally able to grab them from my Mom for my blog. I especially love them now that I have my fashion blog because I mean... these are outfit shots! At one point, my mom had taken some modeling shots and they are such amazing keepsakes. My mom is so beautiful - inside and out. She can seriously light up a room, she's so fun to be around, she's crazy funny and so pretty. I love her to death. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

Graduation

Yesterday, I graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design! How insanely amazing. I actually felt pangs of heartbreak during the whole ceremony as I replayed my college experience over and over in my head. Right from the first day I started.. as my mom helped me unpack my items into my closet of a room in my 5 Lyon apartment, to finding my best friend in Jen as she resided down the hall, to walking to class, crying on my way home because my design drawing professor hated my drawing, to overcoming all of the struggles that I faced with not at all being a good designer in the beginning. To Brett and I sharing my twin bed on weekend nights, to headphones on, carrying my giant pad of paper, and my Macbook computer, to dissecting alphabet letters in typography, to giving speeches and writing creative short stories. To finding myself this past year, with this blog, with my interactive work in my senior level classes, to becoming a studio excellence winner. I truly found myself at Kendall and I'm really sad to be saying goodbye!

Graduation itself was amazing. Our college is a small arts college, so I felt like I knew a little piece about so many kids approaching the stage to get their degrees. You can't say that about most colleges. I felt so proud of each one of them - for pursuing their dreams of going into art or design. It's a risky move - going into art or design! But it's truly a passion for all of us and we'll never have to "work" a day in our lives - because we'll truly love what we're doing.

I remember standing here waiting for Bill to announce my name thinking how glad I was that I went for the flats. Selective Potential flashed across the screen as my "best work" as I accepted my degree for Digital Media in Interactive Design, as the 2010 studio excellence award dinner. Eep! I heard my Mom's whistle from the back of the church (every time I do something that requires applauding, you can bet she's belting out her whistle!) and I honestly felt so proud! I love my family - and especially Brett, for putting up with my insane busy schedule over the past four years.

After graduation, my family and I walked down to the school for reception where they got to see my work in the studio excellence gallery. Since I'm digital, it was just a computer screen in the corner (hehe!) I still can't believe I was announced the studio excellence award winner! On Friday, we had a very fancy, very nice dinner that I was so proud to attend. As soon as I get pictures back from that, I'll put that up on the blog! Thanks again to everyone who said congrats and sent cards and everything. You're all so supportive and I couldn't ask for better friends.. all over the world.

Christmas at Mom's

Saturday night was our traditional Christmas at Mom's house. She always has her party the day after Christmas, which works out great with family. I love her and my step-dad, Dave, to pieces. Their party was so much fun. Our entire family showed up.. and we have a huge family. It was really great to see everyone. My mom loved my photo booth idea so much that she decided to do it at her party too. I love the way it turned out. Brett and I got up there to do our photos and everyone was laughing and when we were done, everyone clapped. We're photogenic professionals!

    Couldn't love this boy more.

This is me, with my gorgeous mother and sister, Lori. Someday I'm going to dip up some old photos of me and my sister. She's older than I am, but we've been such great friends. I think my Mom had her when she was 19 and had me when she was 35. Quite a difference, but you'd never tell when we get to see each other.

My mom's tree was adorable. I had to get a snapshot of her lights because it completely reminded me of something that Delightfully Tacky would have on her tree!

What a super fun night. We even got our first wedding photography gig! It's for family, for my cousin, Tina, but it's a start! It's not until next October, so we're going to get another (better) Nikon and a few more lenses. I'm also going to order a few more photography Photoshop actions. It'll be super exciting. Brett and I don't do much on the weekends anyway and if we could earn a few by doing weddings or senior portraits, why not?! I'm super excited. We're going to try to do an LLC freelance business after I graduate, called D&D Design. How great would that be?

Chopping the tree

We went up north to chop down our Christmas tree today! I've never cut down my own tree before, so I think we started a yearly tradition today. We went with Brett's parents and scoured the fields for the perfect tree. Thank goodness I wore my rain boots because it was so muddy! This would have been a lot prettier in the snow, but.. no complaints yet. The snow will come eventually and I'll end complaining about it after a few days anyway. Hehe. The place we went to get our tree was perfect!

    I think I found one..!
    Let's chop it down!

    Tiiiiimber!
    ...and the finished product!
I love it! We bought all new lights, bulbs, beads and a skirt for it this year. The past two Christmases, we've used our hand-me-downs and decided this year to go all out. We went with the red look, obviously. I love it! So classy. It's nice getting further into marriage because we're finally getting all of our own stuff. Plus, I got a very nice bonus this year for Christmas and so we're able to do a bit more for the holidays! We're going all out for the holiday party too that's coming up! I'm super excited. I love this time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! Today has been a whirlwind of a day! I was woken up by Brett this morning in the most annoying way ever! I had to get up just to get him to leave me alone! Hehe. He's the worst alarm clock ever. We got ready and went to my Dad and Shar's house first. We ate turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls and more. It was delicious! We stayed there for a while before having to run. We had 3 families we had to visit today. That's not a very fun Thanksgiving rushing around all day, but it was good to see everybody!

(my dad, me and his girlfriend, shar)
After my Dad's house, we stopped to my Mom and step-dad's house! My sister's family was over there and we weren't able to stay very long, but we made up a few plates to go and Brett ate a giant chunk of cherry cheesecake.. ugh. I could have killed him! Haha! We ran home to pick up Peter, drop off our trunk of food and head straight over to his parent's for dinner! Brett snapped a few shots outside too!

    (skirt - thrifted | boots - target | tights - betsey johnson
    top - forever 21 | necklace - forever 21 | jacket - gap)

This was Brett's mom's spread. It was so pretty. The dinner was delicious! I seriously stuffed myself today full of delicious food and now we have an entire fridge full of leftovers. My favorite things this year were the sweet potatoes and the pumpkin pie. Mmmm. Love Thanksgiving food!

    (maggie is so cute)
I told everyone we had to get our family photo taken, so Brett obviously had to be my fill in for the test shot. Hehe!

When I was looking at these later, I was like.. Brett and Peter's faces are up to no good. See, I know these two boys better than anybody.. and look at those devious grins. Then I noticed Grandma's head... hahahah. Boys.

(this was our silly picture, teehee!)
After we ate desserts and dropped Grandma off home, the five of us drove out to Grand Rapids to see A Christmas Carol in IMAX 3D. I love 3D animated movies! It was a good movie, for sure, but it was scary! And depressing for most of the movie! But it was still really good. Now I'm in Christmas mode. Thanksgiving pretty much marks the end of the autumn season for me... even though I heard Michigan is supposed to have a green Christmas this year. That bums me out! Christmas is the only time of year that I actually do want snow! Let's hope for a white Christmas at least... and then it can go back to green! :D

Crunchy leaves and bare trees

November. What do I do in November? I honestly don't know. I planned to the minute every thing I wanted to do in October, but now I'm kind of lost as to my plans for November. It's nuts. We were going to take a trip to see Peter, but he is instead coming to Michigan. So we're going to take whatever extra money we get and put it all into savings for a down payment on a house. I so, so desperately want that house we've been looking at recently. It's the perfect house for us. I'm going to be so bummed when some lucky couple gets it before we do. There's no way that house won't sell soon. Anyway, enough about the house, Tieka! You're obsessed. Daylight savings is going to be a huge damper on our daylight shots. I got out of class early today so we were able to snap a quick few before heading over to lurk our house and eat dinner at Brett's parents.

    (tights - target | shoes - sam & libby | skirt - bcbg
    tank - f21 | belts - urban outfitters and f21 | cardigan - target)

Brett's parents just got an adorable kitten, Belle. She is so stinking cute. She is so playful and strong-willed against their two dogs! It's so fun. Brett and I are both absolutely in love with her; she's just the cutest ever.

(we'll always love maggie though too!)

Lakeside sidewalk sale

This morning, I woke up and headed to Lakeside to my Mom's gift shoppe, The Village Gift Shoppe, to help with her sale! We had to set everything outside because it was a sidewalk sale. It was actually a great turnout; made the day go by really fast! I stayed inside mostly, drank a lot of hazelnut mocha coffee, and helped her with wrapping gifts + ringing up customers. I also set up a few new items of hers for fall + halloween. There was a golden sunlight coming through the windows, and it was around sixty degrees outside today, so it just felt so fall. I'm so excited fall starts on Tuesday. It's definitely my favorite season + and I'm going to live up every second of it. After a while, I left to go visit Dad + Shar for a second, and ran home to pick up Brett so he could come help pack up. We packed everything back into boxes and closed up shop! What a wonderful day for a sale outside; gorgeous weather.

    (my adorable, stylish mom)
    (autumn merchandise!)
Afterwards, Brett and I ate dinner at Russ' and went to Target. I bought a new shirt + we went to the Lakes mall to look around. What a dump. I don't know how people in Muskegon shop. They must have to drive to Grand Rapids every time. Seriously. We went home, Jeremy came over and installed our amazing wireless! And now I'm watching the VMA's (so boring) and fashion blogging.

Mackinaw trip

Our Mackinaw trip was absolutely amazing; truly such a great time. Friday night, we drove into Mackinaw City to stay the night. We walked around downtown looking through a few of the shops. Since it's technically "off-season", a lot of them were closed, but the streets were so pretty and quite a few people were still out & about. We got some delicious ice-cream and headed back to our hotel for sleep.

The next morning, we got on Star Line ferry to head to the island. The view approaching the island was gorgeous. We had a beautiful view of Grand Hotel. We got docked, got our bicycles and cycled to our bed and breakfast which was called Pine Cottage. Their porch was so quaint and cute; the whole house was so vintage and old. We had the cutest lilac room with flowered wallpaper, lovely.

    (me, on the porch)

After we checked in, we decided to bike around the island. It's about 8 miles around, so we did that + made a few stops. We saw Arch Rock, Sugar Loaf, Skull Cave & Hell's Kitchen. We took a nature trail walk. The hike to Arch Rock was intense!

(me and brett, stopped at Hell's Kitchen)

After our biking adventures, we went to the main street where we ate at Fred's Burger Joint - I had fresh cut fries and a hot dog. We walked through some of the shops, window shopping, drooling over the many assortments of fudge they had in the windows! After that, we went to Fort Mackinaw to see the fort, built in the 1800's! We walked through all the different buildings; the schoolhouse, hospital, the bath-house, the apartment/houses where soldiers lived. It was so fun, plus the views of Lake Huron were breath-taking!

(view of lake huron/mackinaw from the fort)
After the fort, we ate at Three Brothers pizza tavern. I ate an oversized slice of cheese pizza, which was scrumptious. After dinner, we all biked back to our B&B for naps and relaxation in our lilac bedroom. When we woke up, we all went down to enjoy the sunset evening on their beautiful porch. Rick and Colleen sat on the rocking chairs, while I enjoyed a cup of coffee and a game of go-fish with Brett. It was probably one of the most picturesque moments I've had. I don't think I'll ever forget that moment in time in my life. After that, we walked back downtown to peruse in the shops, and to eat even more delicious ice-cream. (You have to splurge there!) We took a haunted 2-hour walking tour of the island afterwards. It was a blast. We just walked around with a tour guide, while he explained the "haunted" spots and creepy secrets of the island. Our tour guide told us that a little girl who was left to die in our bedroom, haunted the house and the two houses right by ours. Ooooo! After the haunted walking tour, we went back to our B&B to sleep. I didn't see the haunting of the little girl though!

The next morning, we ate breakfast and took a quick bike ride around. The weather made a significant turn for the worse compared to Saturday. So we decided to check out and take the ferry back to the city. It still amazes me that you can't drive to (or on!) the island. It has the only state highway in the U.S. that bans automobiles! People who think Michigan isn't the place to be, obviously haven't been here.

(colleen and rick, on the ferry back)

We got to Mackinaw City and walked to eat at Nonna Lisa's Ristorante. It was like a beautiful log-cabin setting inside; the food was delicious. We each got individual pizzas and they were huge and way too much food. I had a huge doggie-bag to go afterwards; my belly hurt from all the food! We drove over to the Old Mackinaw Point Lighthouse to look around! Brett and I got the chance to climb up in the lighthouse tower and see the gorgeous view of the Mackinaw Bridge which connects the Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula. The museum and other things to see were so fun as well. We skipped stones in Lake Huron afterwards. Rick and Colleen offered to drive us on the Mackinaw Bridge, so I was able to see it and ride on it and I got to be in the U.P. too!

(me and brett, mackinaw old lighthouse + mackinaw bridge)
It was my first time coming up to Mackinaw Island! I'd never been to the U.P. either; which is really exciting. It was such a wonderful trip and I had so much fun with my family. I couldn't have married into a better family; Rick and Colleen paid for everything this weekend and treated us to way more than we both deserve! They are truly the best in-laws in the world and I love them both to death. Brett and I wouldn't have half as much as we do without them, and their never-ending support and generosity. <3
