Historic Fishtown

I was so excited to visit Historic Fishtown. I had recently discovered it when I was looking into our trip and couldn't believe I didn't know of this place before. It's in northern Michigan, right along Lake Michigan. It was a commercial fishing district and has provided a livelihood for residents for over a century! Fisherman reached Lake Michigan by way of the Leland River. Small fishing shanties and ice/smoke houses lined the river, now gray and weather-beaten.

I was honestly amazed at this little town and the charm it provided. While some of the shanties serve their original purpose, others were converted into cute candy shops and clothing boutiques! Brett and I had a blast strolling along the boardwalk, checking out the dam, the little shops and devouring delicious ice-cream. The sunset was the perfect touch to our evening in historic fishtown!

We explored the town after spending a day on South Manitou Island. Leland is a commercial fishing area as well as headquarters for transportation to the Manitou Islands. After we arrived back from the ferry and checked into our Inn (cannot wait to tell you guys the story on this!), we headed back to fishtown to dine at their local restaurant, the Bluebird Inn. Delicious!

There was one little fishing shantie called The Crib and it was so cute. They had so many pretty dresses, jewelry pieces and even some Betsey Johnson socks and tights! I picked up one of those bird cage necklaces and have been wearing it constantly lately.

I had such a fun time in this little town and exploring northern Michigan. It's unbelievably beautiful up there... and who knew all of this was only a few hours from us? I had no idea! I'll be posting on the islands this weekend... and next week I have the story about our experience at the inn we stayed at... and my outfit from a cute festival! Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Fish Ladder

On the west side of the Grand River, we have an amazing functional art piece called the Fish Ladder. It was designed so that fish could jump and battle the flowing river easier on their journey east, but it also allows people to see the fish literally jump up the stairs! It's so fun to watch. Most of the activity happens in spring and late summer, but we didn't see any fish jumping this time! We'll have to go back soon!

I found inspiration for this outfit in Lucky Magazine. In the latest issue, they had an article on four ways to style up a lace top. In one of the styles, they paired it with high-waisted pants and heels and I loved it! I was originally going to wear this to Chicago on Saturday for the vintage expo, but the weather was so crappy I decided to opt out. Thankfully it was all sunshine in Grand Rapids on Sunday!

I absolutely adore ThreadSence's new lookbook and couldn't wait to pair my Garren heels with these pants. This whole spread with the floral tank and cardigan is perfect. It's like the exact spring style I want. Now we just need spring weather!

I'm really liking my darker locks lately! It was like... the blonde tips disappeared so suddenly! I went for so long having ombre hair and now it's almost all dark. I was contemplating going darker, or going red, or even adding more highlights but I think I'm going to stick in the natural world for a while. My hair is the least dry/damaged it's ever been! It's so funny because I grew up hating my hair color. I'm glad I finally came around.

A field by the river

We have finally started to see a bit of warm spring weather lately! It's been lovely. I'm so ready to say goodbye to my green parka. Even Brett said he was tired of seeing it. Haha! Last weekend, we took a trip down these railroad tracks out to the river. It was so windy, so we took shelter in this little field! I love how the colors of the grass fit with my bag and shoes! I absolutely love wind, but I'm more of a warm wind gal. With the sun being out though, I can't complain. Spring is here.

So this is my third item I've styled for my spring fever challenge with Lee and Birch. I chose a white long-sleeve top that had such pretty detailing at the top. I knew this top would go perfectly with any type of bottom I wanted. I'm in love with floral shorts lately. I want every pair I see! And saying that, I accidentally purchased these shorts twice... I know, I know. It was online and I didn't recognize that I already had them, so I've decided to just give the other pair away! So if you'd like them, they are size medium, just leave me a comment here!

I'm going to start listing my outfit items at the bottom, in separate lines, so they are easier to read and click on if you're interested! You'll be seeing this darling bag soon on a few bloggers, Syd from The Daybook and Lauren from Busy Bee Lauren. Frock Candy is sending it around to each of us and whoever styles it best gets to keep it. I love style challenges! I had a hard time styling it a bit because I honestly don't have anything else this color, so it was definitely a challenge, but a fun challenge!

I'm super excited for Friday tomorrow. We have dinner plans with my parents and on Saturday we're going to a show in Lansing that Brett wants to see! Hoping to find something day-trip-ish to do on Saturday too before the show. Every Sunday, we've been taking one room in our apartment and spring cleaning it, so this weekend we have the guest bedroom and the west wing hallway. Brett always picks on me because I always call the sections of our apartment the west wing or the east wing! Hehe. Have a great weekend!

Hackley and Hume House

Now that the busiest week of our life is over, Brett and I are back up to our old adventures. Today we headed to a town just north, where I grew up, to head to their downtown area. I tend to resist going back to my hometown because I just couldn't wait to get out, but they do have a lot of history there that I absolutely adore. There are few things that will bring me back home and these houses are one of them. I've loved these houses since I was a kid. Whenever we'd pass them, I would just stare in awe at how amazingly beautiful they are. So, blog readers, you get to experience the beauty today... of the Hackley and Hume homes!

A quick back story... they were built in the 1800's and are perfect examples of Queen Anne architecture. The Hackley and Hume Houses were the home of the town's most famous lumber baron, Charles Hackley and his business partner, Thomas Hume. The families shared the middle barn (called City Barn) and it was used for horses, equipment and two coachmen who had living quarters on the second floor. Walking inside of the homes is like... going back into time. They restored the Hackley House to it's 1890 appearance and it's just stunning. The wood carvings and stained glass windows take your breath away.

This darling dress from ModCloth reminded me of something a woman would wear in the 1800's, so I thought it would be fun to style it up at this location! Even Brett thought my outfit went right along with our theme! This woven bag from Le Mode Accessories is going around to each of the girls in the Delightful Dozen, so watch for it next on Veronika from Tick Tock Vintage. I just purchased the tights and I thought the floral print was supposed to go up each side of your leg, but instead it wrapped around! I love them so much. Target had some insane sales... $3.50 for tights! I bought seven pairs today! Oh boy!

Brett and I explored the homes for a while and even the surrounding homes in this historic district. We creeped around this historic home for sale... and were in love. It was the wrong neighborhood for us, but the perfect house. I just can't wait to someday buy a historic home. It's such a dream. I'd love to be able to tell people about who lived in our house a hundred years ago. That would be so amazing! We've been holding out for the perfect one. It'll come along someday. I hope.

Valentine's Day

So, you already know the love story behind our Valentine's Day, but you haven't yet seen the outfit I wore! Well, today is your lucky day. I received lots of compliments at work for my red tights! I felt super girly all day, which was so refreshing. With the cold temperatures, I've been feeling a little blah lately! The fact that it's still light out when I get home from work is like... a dream come true. My pictures are going to be 1000000x better now. Thanks, world!

So last weekend, Brett and I went to Ann Arbor for our Valentine's Day away. I have never been there before, so it was super fun to experience their downtown area! It's way cute! We shopped at Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Ragstock... and I spent a little too much money. Eep. I just had to buy another color of this cardigan. Plus, I finally received victory because this one was on sale and only for $39! We also went on the hunt for a vintage photobooth (post to come!) and ate dinner at Seva and splurged on cupcakes at The Cupcake Station. So fun!

So the fact that spring is hitting is making me so happy. In one month, we'll be turning our clocks forward and the days will be pure bliss. I know sometimes winter is brutal, but oh my gosh, when spring starts to hit... it's like a miracle! You don't take a second of the warmth and sunshine for granted! I'm excited for the rest of February though. The Michigan blogger meet up and the fashion show is coming up at the end of the month and that will be so much fun! Life is good! ps; Thanks to all of my readers who signed up and supported INDIE! It was so fun this week putting on the conference and today was the last day. You can still sign up if you'd like... we'll be offering it as an e-course once it ends! Wee! (ps; thanks Elizabeth for being a blogger's best friend. I simply adore you.)

Ferry park

Happy monday, everyone! I'm so excited for this week because it's a three-day work week and we have Thanksgiving coming up! I love the holidays - what a fun time of year. Brett and I had a great weekend - headed out to Chicago on Saturday with our friends, Jeremy and Kait, for their Magnificent Mile Lights Parade. I cannot believe Christmas is right around the corner. Michigan has held off on snow so far this year - which is perfection. We've had a gorgeous autumn. I like snow to hit after Thanksgiving.

    navy tights - c/o lulu*s | t-strap heels - urban outfitters)

I'm loving this dress from Shop Ruche. If you're a long time reader of my blog, you all know I loveeee my sleeved dresses. They are just so easy to wear - no styling required! Especially when most of the time I have to wear a cardigan over dresses. This little bird print is so cute. I got so many compliments at work on it. A lot of you have asked me if I'm allowed to dress cute at work and if so, what do I wear - well this is it! I get to dress however I want at work - no dress code. So most of the time I'm in dresses, tights, boots, heels - and I go for jeans on Fridays. I love it.

I'll try to sneak out during some lunch breaks and grab some shots of more "work"outfits. These first two weeks have been very busy and a lot of times I haven't been able to sneak out because of meetings or orientation lunches, which has been so much fun. It's so different to work for a place where people want to connect and hang out during lunch. I love it! I'm putting myself on a calendar routine for the blog now that I'm so busy. It's really going to help with consistency in posts! I have a fun giveaway coming this week + a mini tour of my new office and workplace!
