South Manitou Island

We took a ferry from Leland over to South Manitou Island. I had no idea there were islands that existed off the Sleeping Bear Dunes lakeshore! I was so excited to go explore an island with abandoned schoolhouses, farmhouses, shipwrecks and a lighthouse. It truly was an amazing sight to see. The ferry takes about an hour and drops you off on the island. Brett and I did the day-trip, but so many people were heading out there to camp for the weekend!

This old schoolhouse was so amazing. As soon as you stepped inside, it smelled like history. We all sat in the little schoolhouse desks and explored. It was seriously too cool. We took a wagon tour where they dropped you off to a bunch of locations to explore including this school house, an inland lake and old farmhouses!

Of course, our favorite thing was the lighthouse. This lighthouse was massive. When we took a tour to the top, it was an unending spiral staircase! We even got to step off into the house connected to the tower and take a peek. In the 60's, when the lighthouse wasn't maintained, hippies would go in there and draw and vandalize the lighthouse. It was actually really interesting to see.

The view from the top was so freaky. I was holding onto the rail with both hands the whole way and almost felt like I'd fly off because it was so windy! I had such a hard time snapping photos of Brett, thinking I'd fall. Haha! The view of Lake Michigan was stunning though. Sometimes I just can't believe how wonderful it is where we live.

Well, there's a little tour of South Manitou Island! This week I have two more trip posts left! I can't believe a little weekend trip in early July took us all the way into middle of July with posts. It's been really nice to have posts ready to go the past couple of weeks. It's been so hot here lately and I sometimes feel so guilty about how lazy I dress. Today I wore one of Brett's t-shirts and a floral skirt with flats. Not to mention, I wore that same t-shirt to bed last night. So awful! I'll get my butt in gear next week. Have a great Monday, everyone!

Historic Fishtown

I was so excited to visit Historic Fishtown. I had recently discovered it when I was looking into our trip and couldn't believe I didn't know of this place before. It's in northern Michigan, right along Lake Michigan. It was a commercial fishing district and has provided a livelihood for residents for over a century! Fisherman reached Lake Michigan by way of the Leland River. Small fishing shanties and ice/smoke houses lined the river, now gray and weather-beaten.

I was honestly amazed at this little town and the charm it provided. While some of the shanties serve their original purpose, others were converted into cute candy shops and clothing boutiques! Brett and I had a blast strolling along the boardwalk, checking out the dam, the little shops and devouring delicious ice-cream. The sunset was the perfect touch to our evening in historic fishtown!

We explored the town after spending a day on South Manitou Island. Leland is a commercial fishing area as well as headquarters for transportation to the Manitou Islands. After we arrived back from the ferry and checked into our Inn (cannot wait to tell you guys the story on this!), we headed back to fishtown to dine at their local restaurant, the Bluebird Inn. Delicious!

There was one little fishing shantie called The Crib and it was so cute. They had so many pretty dresses, jewelry pieces and even some Betsey Johnson socks and tights! I picked up one of those bird cage necklaces and have been wearing it constantly lately.

I had such a fun time in this little town and exploring northern Michigan. It's unbelievably beautiful up there... and who knew all of this was only a few hours from us? I had no idea! I'll be posting on the islands this weekend... and next week I have the story about our experience at the inn we stayed at... and my outfit from a cute festival! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Point Betsie Lighthouse

Our first stop along our Northern Michigan trip was Point Betsie Lighthouse! Brett and I had been here before to shoot a wedding last autumn, but we wanted to come back and take our own photos this time! We picked up dorky t-shirts in the gift shop, toured the lighthouse and spent a little time down on the beach! It was so windy and really cold right on the water! We were taking photos and I got soaked by the waves crashing up on the pier. My hair is always doomed to be curly on our trips anyway!

Point Betsie Lighthouse is located about five miles north of Frankfort, Michigan and just south of Sleeping Bear Dunes! I love the view from the tower because you can see Sleeping Bear Dunes and both South and North Manitou Islands. Point Betsie is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States and likely the most visited tourist attraction in Benzie County!

We always end up with old man and wife tour guides. Usually they are staying for a few weeks or the summer to give tours and work on renovating the lighthouse. It's so funny because they always love Brett and I. It's because Brett and I are a young couple... that love to do old people things. Touring lighthouses along the shoreline of Lake Michigan is a retired couple's dream! I'm glad we're some of the corniest 20 somethings out there!

I kept my outfits fairly simple on the trip! I wanted to do a lot with pattern mixing and matching my outfits to my locations. I packed five or six pairs of flats! Flats are a must when climbing up endless spiral steps to a lighthouse tower! Especially on the lighthouses where you can step outside at the top, you need something steady. It can be so windy at the top and it's kind of freaky to look down! Have you guys been up to a lighthouse tower before?

The Gateway City

Brett and I have been talking about it for a while, so I suppose it's not totally spontaneous, but... this weekend we took a last-minute trip to St. Louis, MO! We actually ate dinner with my parents, got home around 8 PM and were like, "Wanna go to St. Louis?" I had some major trepidation at first, but we did it! It was so much fun. One of those weekends Brett and I will look back on in fifty years and laugh about, you know?

We drove about 5 hours on Friday and stopped in Bloomington, IL to stay the night. Brett and I always complain at each other every night before bed that our full bed just isn't enough, so a king-size bed is such an amazing treat. Haha! The next morning, we headed out toward St. Louis! We were so excited to see the arch as we approached the city! We both have never seen it before and it's so amazing.

For the first part of the day, we spent it at City Museum. We've heard amazing things, so we had to experience it for ourselves. It was like... Brett and Tieka paradise. We were seriously in love. It's basically a playground for adults and kids! There was a cave you could crawl into every nook and cranny, you could climb up into this tree house, through these tunnels, up and down, people crawling in the ceiling... it was so awesome. We took this 10-story slide down and I just giggled the entire time. Outside was a madhouse, people crawling through tunnels in the sky! Best museum ever!

After the museum, we visited the arch and were just in awe. It's amazing. It's definitely something everyone has to see in their lifetime. We were also just so grateful for the weather. To leave Michigan at it's 38 degree snow/rain slush to 84 degrees and sunny/windy in St. Louis was a dream come true. We walked all around downtown, explored the city garden and ate pizza for dinner. I marveled over every flower... it was like we jumped into the future of spring!

After walking around, we decided to go back to the arch for a while. It was just too amazing not to spend more time there. We just laid on the grass and stared up at it for a while. I just kept thinking about how for years to come, Brett and I will always remember this trip.

So our weekend in St. Louis was just perfect. I loved it. It was the first time for both of us to be in Missouri... to see the Mississippi river... to see the arch... to slide down an indoor 10-story slide and crawl through the craziest tunnels ever. The drive on Sunday home was even fun! We drove the entire 8 hours home with the windows down, 84 degrees? I mean, seriously? Too good to be true.
