ZDNet reports (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-6099299.html) on Microsoft's recently revealed audio player initiative known as "Zune". Last week (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1040_22-6097935.html?tag=nl) Microsoft confirmed that they were entering the music player market with an integrated solution for music, called Zune:
"We do need a more consistent experience," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a January interview. "That doesn't mean it's bad to have a variety of devices. I think that's great. But there are some things we need to make sure are more consistently delivered across the portable devices."
In the latest article, Microsoft's president of the Entertainment and Devices Division states that the Zune initiative is a long term effort with tie ins into other Microsoft projects including the Xbox, Medica center and Live Anywhere gaming.
Bach didn't offer new details on Zune but said creating a sense of community and making it easier to find new music are central to it. "We're not just introducing Zune to do the same thing other people do," Bach said. Still, he said, the company expects it to take three to five years for the effort to really pay off.

3rd party apps crash, all of the them  The standard Apple apps still work.
Terrible update.
That's strange. Not having the first problem here.

do you guys think i should just go ahead and buy a macbook then? i would love a MBP, but its to expensive.. im just a highschool student, and the black would really be great.
i dont know what to do :(
If you need it now buy it now! But when the macbooks get upgraded they may have a price drop and more ram and faster CPU and maybe even better graphics, just wait aslong as you can and if they havent had upgrades then your just gunna have to live with that..

Apples got to be thrilled, they got just what they wanted. A good dose of conflict and confrontation.
I truly believe Steve is addicted to chaos.
Gee, is that why their stock goes up 10 points at the end of every quarter?
I'll take the dose of conflict and confrontation with my Apple stock.
And how is your Samsung and MS stock doing?
Enough said!

Is "TB" going to be the abbreviation for thunderbolt?
It will be cumbersome when speaking of drives. "I bought a 2TB TB drive".

It is interesting to see the 3Gs doing so well. Too bad Apple doesn't make a "light version" of iOS for it so it's snappier again. It was a good phone and for many consumers at $49 or maybe even free someday a great entry level smart phone.

Apple has in their favor the fact that many people now have ripped CDs and bought protected music in Apple formats.
You just demonstrated the risk of closed formats and DRM. Suppose a superior product does become available. That superior product would have hard time competing, since iPod-users are tied to FairPlay (if they have used iTunes that is).
That said: there has been rumors that Microsoft would make the songs the user has bought from iTunes available to "switchers" for free, eliminating the FairPlay-lock in (by replacing it with another lock-in).

will eductional institutions really want the wikipedia integration? my school is certainly not big on wikipedia. if apple could strike a deal with MacKiev, World Book software could come with iWork and be integrated with pages and the whole suite in general.
Mine already provides links to Wikipedia from it's math's pages. It's a pretty reputable University too (top 10 in the UK), it's a great idea especially as wikipedia has a lot more articles than any other encyclopaedia. Britannica for example has only 100 000 articles (compared to wikipedia's 1.2 million)
EDIT
I have to admit wikipedia got me through my exercise sheets for first year maths, the articles seemed pretty well targeted to it!

Of course they are.
This kind of thing has to be paid for somehow. Common options:
1. Pay subscription
2. Ad supported
3. Loss-leader to help sell something profitable.
This rumor is suggesting that Apple is going with a combination of 1 and 3.

Looking at the 15" models. With the educational discount, is it worth an extra $500 for the 15" 2.33GHz, 2GB Ram, 256MB Graphics. The other model is 2.16GHz, 1GB Ram & 128MB Graphics.
I'm going for the extra video RAM, i know it doesn't help much but it is a crappy card and needs to last me at least 2 years. Good enough for WoW though!

Forget MS I think Apple needs to worry about Sandisk and their 8gig flash player.
SanDisk has announced a drop in price for many of their digital audio players, including the e260 and e250, which are now $ 200 and $ 150 direct, respectively (with a limited free case offer). The cheaper c100's and m200's have also decreased in price, though most of SanDisk's models are quite a bit cheaper if you buy them from various webshops.
Also, hiding on SanDisk's site is a picture of the once-rumored e280 (8 GB), now visible under the e250/60 flash demo. Well, it says 8 GB on the back at least, I doubt it's a typo.
It seems SanDisk is gunning to push this out ahead of the next iPod Nano iteration, which many expect to get a bump in capacity as well. I'd really like to see an 8 GB player, but even more so I'd like SanDisk to work out the few little bugs in the e200's first and foremost (eliminate the headphone out noise, improve on-board playlisting, perhaps space out the playback buttons).
Using a firmware sandisk users haven't seen yet so that says something.

...current generation of LTE chips forced design compromises that the company has been unwilling to make.
Translation: Apple's new iPhone, code named Anorexia, couldn't possibly hold 2 chips! We aim to make a phone so thin, a postage stamp would add bulk.

There is no way that Apple's model can compete on absolute sales to the multi-device approach of their competition. But that's only a tiny part of the picture.
Why not?
What's more they are likely to hold on to the upper end of the demographic, just as they do in personal computers. Their customers will be high earners who will buy music and apps and other content. They'll be invested in the ecosystem in a way which Android users will not be.
I'm really skeptical of this point - I'm not really sure that Apple has the upper end of the demographic now when it comes to phones. Everyone who buys a smartphone is paying ~$2,000 over the life of their contract for service, and the phones are roughly comparable in price to each other, particularly when you factor in the total cost of ownership. Meanwhile, the vast majority of apps cost less than $5, with most being 99c. (I would also suspect that people in their 20's making less than $30,000 per year would buy more apps than lawyers in their 50's making $300,000 per year.)
