Warm in our apartment

Here are the last of the photos from our session with Bryan and Mae! I absolutely love our pictures and can't wait to frame some for our apartment. So... speaking of our apartment, these last shots were all done in our home! After we froze all morning outside taking shots, it was so great to come inside and drink hot cocoa and warm up! Our apartment is the entire upstairs of a house, so you have to come up stairs when you come in and this sign is always here to greet you for whatever season we're in! Brett designed it for winter!

We love our little sun room. There are so many windows and a slider that leads to the outdoor deck, so it's just a really well-lit area for a couch and chair. Plus, the roof is a wooden-plank style ceiling that indents up. I love it! Little details about older homes just touch my heart. It's secretly why I can't bring myself to build a house and am instead throwing that idea out the window to again look for an older home with more charm. I love our apartment. This is the 12th home I've lived in.. and it's by far my favorite place I've ever lived.

This is usually what I'm wearing on a lazy weekend. I'm in love with my Gap jeggings... they are just so comfortable. I can't even bring myself to put on "real jeans" anymore. Add a v-neck and a cardigan (plus Brett's oversized socks!) and I'm all set for the day!

Well I hope you guys enjoyed all of the photos from our session with Bryan and Mae! If you missed the first three sessions, be sure to check them out! The wintry photos are just so pretty, even if winter is my least-favorite season, I can definitely see the beauty in it. The news is threatening snowpocolypse at 10 PM tonight... are any of you seeing anything yet? I haven't seen a single snowflake. I think it's all a bunch of hype!

Blog studio

Brett and I finished the "blog studio" today! We basically had a lot of it done a couple weekends ago, but I was waiting on some poster pictures to get back from the printer and we needed wall anchors to hang up my big ol' frames! I'm a sucker for picture frames. We have so many frames all over our apartment. Our apartment is slowly becoming "complete". I just need to finish the laundry room and the sun room and it'll be perfect. I really want to stay here for a while. This will definitely be the last place we rent, at least. Next move is to buy a house - and I'm thinking in a couple of years, we'll be ready, but for now I'm just in love with our place. It's the perfect beach town apartment.

I am a huge organizational freak. I just need things to be put away. Out of sight, out of mind, I say! Sometimes I can't relax on the couch when I know the floor underneath it is dirty. Or if I see some cat hair fly across the floor like a rolling tumbleweed, I feel instantly uncomfortable and gross. It's such a weird feeling. When I lived with my parents when I was a teenager, my mom would never have to scold me to clean my room. I'm too much of a neat freak, I think. While Brett, on the other hand, could live in complete filth! You should have seen his apartment when I first met him. Eww.

We basically got everything for the studio from IKEA! The desk, the chair, the boxes and magazine files, the picture frames, the magnetic board.. I love it. It's so cheap and everything looks wonderful together. All of the colors were so easy to match and everything is a piece of cake to put together (thank you, Brett!) I did install the filing boxes though! Go me! But now I have boxes for shipping materials, letters I get in the mail and everything else. It's so nice to find everything right where you need it!

The kitties are banned to the futon in the other area of this room. They keep sitting on my new chair in the studio and it's fuzz-covered already. We just shaved Meg the other day. I should have taken video.. it was like a complete garbage can full of cat hair. So yucky! She's so fat and lazy.. so she can't really bend around and clean herself, so she's just a grease pile, so we have to shave her down to nothing. She's on the right. Her name is Meg, but we just call her fatty. The one looking at you all crazy is Sergeant Death; aka Sarge. They make life interesting to say the least!

Brett is excited because he got a new place to put his record player and all of his records! He was so helpful in my studio. I mean, I get a whole corner in this apartment devoted to my obsession with blogging... and he gets a measly little cabinet for his obsession with records. What a darling husband! From everything from the actual IKEA experience from the installation at home, it's a true test of marriage! In IKEA, at first, we're just like Tom and Summer in (500) Days of Summer.. so happy and in love.. then we get down to the marketplace.. and you can tell Brett is getting more aggravated. Come the rug section, he's starting to hate me.. and then the picture frames next.. full on hate! Then.. the warehouse? Murder face! Afterwards, I always have to go for pizza for him and then about an hour into the drive home, we're back in love again until he has to install these crazily insane pieces. If you can get through IKEA in your marriage, you can accomplish anything! ;)

Guest bedroom

So finally we're getting close to an end on this apartment! It's honestly way too huge for us; too much extra space! We got a used mattress last week, picked up a few end tables and the picture frame from IKEA, and had the curtains and comforter left from our old apartment! We also got a new rug and some new lamps from IKEA. The guest bedroom is honestly adorable, but Brett and I laugh when we close the door saying.. mkay, empty room! It's not like anyone ever stays with us; I'm sure Pete will if he comes to visit us, but other than that? No guests! Haha; we're going to have to start having babies to fill these extra rooms we have in our apartment. ;] Not yet. Hehe. Not for another 4-5 years.

IKEA

So today, I drove out to Canton to go to IKEA to spend my birthday money. I forgot how long of a drive it is out there; it was awful. I finally got there and started dancing and singing in the car by myself, making up songs about how amazing and wonderful IKEA is. (Brett would have died listening to that!) So I got inside, breathed that fresh air of IKEA scent, and ventured into the hallways of wonderfulness. I spent a good three hours in there, perusing the new items, running around matching pillow covers to our curtains, pondering over which lamp shade to purchase, you know, the usual. It was absolutely wonderful. I even picked up a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls for our guests who are staying the night this weekend. So I drove home and unloaded and put away what I could.

    (the rec room)
(we call it the rec room because we don't know what else to call it)
(we have too many rooms for our own good)
(another angle and this is only 1/4 of the room,
there is a hallway that leads down to the office)
After I got my stuff put away, I ran to the grocery store to completely stock up our fridge for our guests/party this weekend. I've never seen our refrigerator more full. Now I have an IKEA hangover; exhausted with a major headache. But I'm loving our apartment. There is still so much to do, but I'm starting to wonder if I want to work on this apartment that much. I might save all of this energy for when we buy a house. At least I'm buying all things we can take with us.

Living room and kitchen

This past weekend we kind of "finished up" the living room and kitchen. I still want to purchase some things for it, like a couple of oversized chairs for the back corners in the living room because that is a pretty empty area. There are always improvements to be made, but I'm really excited with how it is turning out! Slowly, but surely! For my birthday, I am asking to go to IKEA. I have a list already! We should definitely have the sun room and rec room finished by our huge Coast Guard party in August. Plus, with Pete moving in for two months, I have one less room to decorate for now. I'm super excited to get this place filled up, cozied and decorated.

Outdoor patio

Our outdoor patio is coming along fabulously. After some amazing donations from family and some repotted flower pots thanks to Colleen, and some fix-ups here and there, I'd say it's safe to say we're pretty much done with it. We have yet to get some chair pads for the lounge chairs, and hopefully someday a better grill that doesn't smoke our guests out. But I'm in love with it. It's just wonderful. I can't wait for many barbeques to take place in the near future.

Moving Day!

Moving Day! Today was exhausting. We woke up too early and packed too much. Brett's parents are seriously the greatest people on earth. They helped us pack, clean, unpack, paint, move, clean some more. Brett and I would honestly just be totally lost without them. We completely moved out of the Crescent apartment. It was completely empty and clean when we left. We even returned the keys to Ruth and said goodbye. I still have yet to go back and wish Art happy goodbye, and let him know he is the greatest landlord of all time. I worked on the new apartment all night basically. Since we had everything purchased already for the bedroom, and it was painted last week and completely ready to move into, Brett and I went all out and finished it tonight! There are a few minor adjustments left to work on, but I'm so pleased with how it turned out. [[aka; IKEA is the greatest place on the planet.]] I cannot wait to have people over to see the place. I'll make a post each time I have a room finished. It shouldn't take too long, so I'm super excited. First finished room... our bedroom!

1st Nautical Knot

We enjoyed our first nautical knot of the season, one of many to come, I'm sure! We met up with Peter and Andrea in downtown Grand Haven to hang out for a little bit, which was nice. Earlier we had gone to Jon and Amber's baby shower/open house, it was super great to meet/see them after so long.

(brett likes cinnamon sugar with icing)
(tieka likes butter and salt, mmm)

Afterwards, Peter and Andrea followed us so we could show them the outside of our new apartment! We have the entire upstairs of this house. I can't wait to get some pictures of the inside to show off! We're looking forward to it!

House on the Hill

I'm enjoying our home in Heritage Hill currently. It's not exactly what I had expected for us in Grand Rapids, but after time spent there, it's quite perfect. It's a ten minute walk downtown, a two minute scooter ride. I love it. I love Grand Rapids. Our neighborhood. Our lives. Although crazy right now with carpooling and schedules, I'm content.

Last night, we walked downtown to 'Celebration on the Grand'. Tons of people downtown, sun setting and bands playing made for a great atmosphere. We went down there with Tim and Landon to meet up with Peter and Sandy. We laid blankets down to watch the fireworks. It felt like the night lasted two seconds. It always does lately.

School is going great. I'm done with my first week. None of my classes seem too scary, maybe a bit of work entailed, but I'm ready and excited for it.

Our 1st Place!

Brett and I moved into our new home tonight. I can't wait until it's completely decorated and lived in for a while. It's so cute - and great. And our families donated so much to us. Yesterday, Brett and I watched a movie on his couch in his basement bedroom for the last time. In our lives. It will never happen again, on that couch, with that TV, in that basement. I cried to Brett. Honestly; that is so sad to think about. That is honestly my favorite place in the entire universe. Brett and I have spent so many nights on that couch renting movie after movie. Drinking Pepsi after Pepsi, eating popcorn Brett made for us. One year ago, it was where Brett and I promised each other we would marry one another. I know it's so sappy - but it's so sad to me. !@#$ I cry just thinking about it again. But we're off to new adventures together; and we'll spend evenings in our living room on that same couch watching the same TV, renting movie after movie and Brett will still make his amazing popcorn. And then we'll get to sleep next to each other every single night; for the rest of our lives. I can't complain ever again.

5 Lyon

Our apartment at 5 Lyon is gorgeous. All of our girly things combined make this place look awesome. All of the walls are exposed brick, brand new everything. My bedroom is tiny, but I love it. I got all new sheets and bedding, and my new Macbook looks so cute in there!

I'm so excited for this year here! Our views of downtown Grand Rapids are amazing! Everyone here seems really nice. Our roommates seem kind of artsy and weirdo and crazy, but what do you expect going to an art college? Jen and I will survive anything, and I'm so excited to live with her!
