Featured Blogger: Fifth Edition

For my fifth featured blogger, I'd love to introduce you to Greer. If you haven't checked her out yet, you are in for an amazing treat. I am constantly clicking over to her blog for inspiration on new ideas I've never seen before, how to take new items and vintage items and mix them together to work perfectly and am always just in awe at how gorgeous she is. Not only does she inspire me with her incredible style, she's so down to earth, kind and has been a wonderful support of my blog. Here are ten interview questions to get to know a little bit more about Greer! She's a gem.

    1. When and why did you start your blog?

I started my blog at the very end of last year because I liked to write. I used to write much more, less often. Nowadays, many of those are not visible. I never really got to the place I am at until I started taking lots of photographs at the beginning of this year. After I bought a dress, I would go home, cut off the tags, try it on, and then I would take pictures with my dad’s old camera, just for fun. As time went on, my best friend Anna started to take photos of me, which was nice, because we would go on drives to picturesque places that I had never seen before. We took maps and cameras along and ended up doing this more often. My blog has changed quite a bit over these past few months, I still like to write little tales and stories underneath my posts, but I just take lots of pictures of hats, velvet skirts and pocket watches to go along with it.

    2. Where are you from?

I am from Auckland, New Zealand. I have lived here all my life. It’s right at the bottom of the world, quite far away from everything else.

    3. What do you aspire to be "when you grow up"?

I’m still not sure what I really would like to do, I’m still a student in high school, studying to graduate in about one year from now. I don’t really have a plan yet. I will just have to wait and see what happens. I am good at painting, and art, but I’m not sure where that would take me. I was thinking I could maybe get a communications degree at university and work towards a creative advertising job or anything else in the creative industries. I really would like to be an art director in magazine perhaps, but of course it would take me a long time to get such a position. I may even choose something completely unusual and out of the ordinary, like a criminal lawyer, something interesting. It would also be nice to one day own my own vintage clothing store, oh, that would be very lovely.

    4. What are some of your favorite blogs to read?

Oh gosh, there is too many to mention them all. But my absolute favourites are, your wonderful blog, of course, WishWishWish, Gary Pepper Vintage, and A Little Brighter.

    5. Name a couple of bands you're currently playing on repeat.

Rooney, Beach House (walk in the park), Hurts, Hercules & Love Affair, Future Islands (inch of dust), St Etienne, Marina and the Diamonds.

    6. Where do you get your inspiration?

I find it in the most unusual places. I get my inspiration when I am just sitting down on the bus stop, or when I am walking down the street, I see someone who I've never met before, and they inspire me ever so much with what they are wearing. I love seeing people who I have to turn my head to look back at. People are fascinating, the way they interact with each other and the stories behind their eyes. Just watching someone for a minute or pausing and taking a second glance can give me so much inspiration, I ask myself, who is this person, what are their skeletons, and what they are thinking of. I am also incredibly inspired by my Mother and Grandmother, Alexa Chung, 20th century movie screen icons, my best friend, the girls and boys on tumblr, the person sitting next to me when I am on the train, black and white photographs that I find in old family albums, the places I go which have a lot of history, when I close my eyes tightly, and while I read novels. I am easily inspired by anything.

    7. Where do you love to shop?

Modcloth, vintage and second-hand stores, the Salvation Army, Topshop, my mother and sister’s closet mostly.

    8. How would you describe your style?

I wear my school uniform and floral overalls. When I dress up, I like to wear polka dot blouses with puff sleeves and collars, mary-janes with lace socks, and I like to carry around vintage purses with me as well.

    9. What is your goal with blogging? Do you want to make a career out of it or are you just having fun?

Oh! Well, I would love to make as many friends through here as I can. I would love to talk to and get to know as many of my followers as I can. I really do try and comment on many different peoples blogs, because a lot of the time, I find people who think the same as me. We all have the same interests, and a love for vintage clothing. I love discovering new blogs to read. It’s just splendid really. I have already met so many lovely people through here and have been given many opportunities. It is everything I could ask for really. I am so very pleased where I am already. I am just having fun for now, and I couldn’t imagine not having my blog, it is the most wonderful thing to have. Also I am so happy to have been chosen as the featured blogger. Thank you so very much, Tieka!

    10. Any tips for new bloggers out there?

I think you should be very brave, post as often and as consistently as you can. Also post content that you personally find interesting. Get to know your followers by commenting on their blogs when you have the time and responding to the questions that they ask you. And most of all, have fun!

I hope you all enjoyed learning more about Greer! Be sure to head over to her blog and follow for amazing style and wonderful writing! For those of you who ask, I choose girls who I feel deserve to be in the spotlight - not only for their inspiring style, but for their kind personalities! Featured Blogger: Fourth Edition

For my fourth featured blogger, I'd love to introduce you to Kate from Postcards From if you haven't already heard of her! I feel like I've "known" Kate for forever - she's the sweetest person ever. We've been chatting since January and I've been adoring her style ever since I first heard of her. She inspires people with her amazing style, her wonderful relationship with her boyfriend, their gorgeous photos and her seriously kind soul. She mixes grunge, girly, vintage, delicate yet edgy into all of her outfits. I don't know how she does it - I take some serious inspiration from this girl! Be sure to check her out - you'll be inspired too!

    1. When and why did you start your personal style blog, Postcards From?

I started Postcards From 8 months ago. It originally started out as a creative writing outlet for me, then turned into a style blog. When I was in high school, I would come home everyday and jump online and look at personal style blogs. I love the fact that girls (and boys!) of all shapes and sizes can create a place to completely be themselves and inspire others. That's why I started my blog. I wanted to be inspired, and in turn, inspire others daily.

    2. You're originally from Canada - what do you love most about your home town?

I live on a golf course back home with my family, and one of the things I miss most about where I live is that I wake up and look out and see golf carts everywhere. I feel like I'm in the Flintstones or something! I love the weather, food and people in Canada. Everyone is so lovely and the coffee shops are some of the best, and how can I forget poutine? Amaaazing!

    3. Has moving to Australia affected your personal style?

I definitely loved being surprised by Australian fashion. I came here thinking it would be beach babes in bikinis everywhere, but Australia has some of the best style when you really look for it! I found a love for lace, floral and neutral colors that I didn't have in Canada. I have a lack of fear in Australia when it comes to my style. I don't mind stepping out of the house in something ridiculous - if I like it, I'll wear it!

    4. Tell us a little bit about your "dreamboat", Nathan!

He is dreamy ;) - but really, Nathan is fantastic. His hair is longer than mine, he loves music and spends every Saturday teaching kits how to do art! He truly is the Mario to my peach.

    5. What inspires your personal style?

I'm seriously inspired by everything! I wear tights pretty much 95% of the time, so I am very inspired by movies with characters that wear tights (Peterpan and Robin Hood!) I get inspired by the different colors of fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. One time I picked up an avocado with a clove of garlic and realized I loved cream with dark green together!

    6. What are your plans for the future?

I would love to someday create my own magazine. I love writing, and having the opportunity to make a difference in such a tangible way. It would specialize in fashion, art, world issues and cute cupcake recipes! I want something that girls can pick up and think, "Yeah, I don't have to be stick thin and wear clothes that show everything to be accepted. I can sew clothes, make music and read comic books and not be a total weirdo!"

    7. What are some of your favorite blogs?

Your blog is actually my absolute favorite! I also love Maria from Lulu Letty, Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky, Eleanor from Bonjour Bbydoll and Avalonne from the girl from hk, Idn & sf. Those girls warm my heart and inspire me so much.

    8. A favorite band?

I love Vampire Weekend at the moment. They make me want to go out in the street and bust a move!

    9. Describe your style in 3 words.

    Feminine, vintage, romantic.

    10. Any tips for new bloggers?

My biggest advice is to never do it for 'fame' or hundreds of comments. If it ever gets to that point then it's not fun anymore. I always make sure that I am doing it because I love it and nothing else. Also, making sure that you try to comment on blogs that comment on yours. It shows that you really appreciate them and love their blog, too!

I hope you all enjoyed learning more about Kate! Be sure to head over to her blog, Postcards From, to say hello! She's so sweet - you'll love her! If you enjoyed reading this, be sure to check out my previous featured bloggers! I choose girls who I feel deserve to be in the spotlight - not only for their style, but for their personalities and kindness! I'll be back in winter with another blogger!

Featured Blogger: Third Edition

For my third featured blogger, I'd love to introduce you to Bonnie from Flashes of Style (if you haven't already met this beauty through her wonderful blog!) When I first started blogging, I came across Bonnie's Chictopia and instantly fell in love with this first image below. It was the perfect look to me and I found her blog and have been following ever since. I read through every post starting from the very beginning loving her amazing talent at thrifting and ability to layer gorgeous outfits. She has a love for florals, like I do, and she pulls them off effortlessly. Bonnie has most definitely been an inspiration to me and I know she will be to you too!

    1. What made you decide to start a personal style blog?

Well, I have always had a strong interest in fashion. Whether it be getting inspiration from magazines, street-style, or putting outfits together from my closet, and even creating my own mini "photo-shoots" with my friends, fashion has always been a prominent hobby of mine. I eventually decided, why not share my passion with the world? That is how my blog came to be!

    2. You're a fashion student - what are your future dreams/plans?

I would eventually love to be a fashion stylist. I think that having a fashion blog is such a great way to develop your own distinctive personal style. I think that after I fully discover it, styling would be my dream career. I also have taken several fashion merchandising and PR classes. So in the meantime, I would love to do something creative like visual merchandising.

    3. What is another passion of yours besides fashion?

Film photography has become a very strong passion of mine. I have been collecting an assortment of 35mm cameras, and I just love experimenting with them. As of recently, I just learned how to develop my own photos in a dark room, which makes it even more fun. Music is another love of mine. Although I do not play any instruments, I always surround myself by music! And of course, books are great. Characters in novels are my friends.

    4. Did your semester in London affect your style?

Absolutely! I lived in central London, so basically everyday was like walking on a street that was a runway. I would get on the tube to go to class and see these immaculately dressed people. The styles I saw definitely inspired me, and also being in such a fashion forward environment allowed me to express myself more freely.

    5. What are some of your current favorite blogs?

One of my absolute favorites blogs, and a very popular one, is Cherry Blossom Girl. I just adore her photos and how she makes every single post so enchanting. I am also really into Seriale-Moduse. She makes the BEST collages which are so inspiring. A few other favorites include Gala Gonzalez, Garace Doré and Alice Point.

    6. A favorite band?

My top three favorite bands are: The Kinks, Beach House and Wilco. I also love anything folk, alt. country or indie.

    7. You are wonderful at thrifting! Any secrets?

Thank you, first of all! I suppose a secret would be that I look through absolutely everything in the store, and even look through the racks twice. The best pieces I have thrifted are items which I have altered. For example, a lot of my dresses used to be floor-length or had big puffy sleeves or something silly like that. Basically, just keep one eye open for ways to customize the clothing you find.

    8. Where do you get your inspiration for your style?

Oh so many places! Of course I get inspiration from the obvious, like magazines, blogs, runway, and the street. I also love when inspiration surprises me in new places, like an art museum, an old film, a pretty sunset or anything like that. Inspiration is everywhere!

    9. What do you love most about your hometown in Texas?

The people, the food, and good thrifting! Also the comfort of southern living is quite nice.

    10. Any tips for new bloggers trying to start up?

Just go for it! I spent months just
browsing other people's marvelous blogs before I got the courage to start up my own. Everyone is different, and it's so exciting seeing what new bloggers have to say.

I hope you all enjoyed learning a little bit more about Bonnie! Be sure to head over to her blog, Flashes of Style, for more wonderful inspiration. If you enjoyed reading this feature, be sure to check out my first featured blogger, Delightfully Tacky, and my second blogger, Modern Day Charm! I do a featured blogger every season, so be sure to look out in fall for a new lovely lady!

Featured Blogger: Second Edition

For my second featured blogger, I'd like to showcase a great friend and amazing blogger, Chandra from Modern Day Charm. She just recently started her own personal style blog and it has taken off, with such good reason. She was also named a Chictopia style icon for March! She has amazing style, has such an eye for gorgeous photography and is a down-right sweetheart. We grew up in the same town in Michigan and she now resides in St. Louis. I can't wait to visit her in spring! Be sure to check out this amazing girl! I love her.. so I'm sure you will too!

1.You're a pretty new blogger. What made you decide to start your own personal style blog?

Honestly I've had a few blogs in the past (non fashion related) and I never had the motivation to keep updating them! I want a place where I can merge memories, photography, and fashion together. I have a love for all three and never had an outlet before now. I also have a huge problem with getting really bored with my closet. I made this blog to keep me creative with what I have. A new item becomes old news to me before you can say “blog” so this definitely helps my pocket book. I feel like a little kid playing dress up in my own closet. I love throwing things together than I never thought of before. It's been an amazing experience and I never thought I would love it this much!

    2. Where does your inspiration come from for your outfits?

My inspiration for my outfits is usually related to season, where I'm going, and what I have to do. I work at an upscale hair salon in St. Louis so most of my outfits have to be work appropriate so short skirts/dresses, jeans, holes, scuffed shoes/boots are inappropriate in my workplace (which is a bummer when I can't wear my favorite weathered boots with my outfits!). I work near 50 hours a week someweeks so most of my photos are taken while at work. Once the weather gets nicer and days get longer I'll be able to take more photos of what I wear off the clock. I also find inspiration from movies, music, blogs, and magazines. Layering has been so much fun with this weather so its great seeing how other people are layering their clothing!

    3. For a career, you're a hair stylist. What made you go into that and does it affect your own personal style by making others stylish too?

Ooops! I kind of answered this in my last question! Throughout my blog I talk a lot about being a hair stylist how I love what I do. What I do is my passion and I love being able to make people feel beautiful. Ever since I was little I wanted to do hair but was afraid of what that meant as a long term career. I ended up going to college and got my associates degree. I was trying to find schools to transfer to and get my Bachelors as an English Major when I decided one day (practically on a whim) that if I didn't attempt to do hair then, I probably never would get the chance to again. Within the next week I was applying for grants to go to cosmetology school and a month later I started. With nothing but the outlook of “if I fail I always can go back and get my degree,” I jumped in full throttle. I'm so glad I made the decision to follow what I truly wanted to do. I can't imagine doing anything else. There is nothing better than seeing someone light up for the first time when they see themselves as a beautiful person. I take a lot of responsibility in being the best I can be at what I do and apply it to every single person in my chair every day. I love my guests and I appreciate them whole heartedly. How it affects my own personal style would be directly related to my hair color! It changes frequently.

4.What is another passion of yours besides fashion?

Obviously being a hairstylist is huge but also music. Listening and attending shows alike is something I absolutely love to do. I love going to shows both big and local and taking it all in. Music connects people on a level that is unlike anything else. I've made many solid friendships by attending shows and sharing music. When you're in the car and your singing at the top of your lungs to music that is so loud it surrounds you accompanied by your favorite people... well... what's better than that? That's how I feel about going to a show as well. Listening to your favorite music being played live with emotion and lights and passion while surrounded by a group of people that are there for the exact same reason as you and share the same interests is something truly amazing.

    5. What are some of your favorite places to shop?

I have a confession! I'm terrified of online shopping! The whole clicking the button without trying it on and it getting to me without it working out and the whole hassle of returning it and such is just so intimidating to me! Whew, now that that is out there, I strongly believe you should support your local boutiques. I will go to the boutiques near me before I go to a major chain. If I can't find anything there or if I'm in a rush and know I need a specific thing, then my favorite stores are Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Bakers, Shi, and H&M are the stores I frequent most. I have made a decision though that I need to start getting over my fear. I constantly scan online stores like Modcloth, Top Shop and even Etsy always wishing I could just commit and press the button! I will eventually turn over a new leaf, wish me luck!

    6. How would you describe your style? Or how do you want to be known?

I would describe my style as easy to wear and comfortable. I love anything that looks romantic (lace, ruffle, airy textures, florals, light tints, etc). I also love coupling things together that contrast a look... military boots with a lacy dress, a masculine look with a lacy head wrap for example. Most of my clothing is solid and I don't wear much print unless its subtle or in my accessories (mostly scarves). I love texture in an ensemble. Textured tights with a floral skirt, an airy blouse with a intricate hemmed neckline peaking out wrapped in a belt.

    7. You're currently in St. Louis, MO. What's your favorite thing about your town?

My favorite thing about Saint Louis would have to be the area I live in. I live in a part of town called The Loop (check out the website http://visittheloop.com/). It's only 6 blocks big but is full of boutiques, bars, music venues, restaurants from all over the world, music venues, art galleries, vintage shops, and more. Everything is in walking distance (except where I work) and I love it. Just today I sat outside on our balcony for a while watching the rain come down and heard saxophones in the air. There's always something going on and tons of musicians playing on the streets. I love being in such a diverse area. It's truly a melting pot. In the summer it's always ablast to just people watch. On the weekends when the weather is nice there are drum circles right across the street from my apartment. Anyone can come and play and usually a ton of people do. I've seen fire throwers, belly dancers, street-side robotic dancers, and a rollerblading dance show. Pretty awesome and you never know what to expect!

    8. What are some of your favorite blogs currently?

Since I'm new to this whole blogging world I'm still trying to find all the gems! There are so many impressive and beautiful blogs out there! Not to be a huge mushy gush, but I love your blog, Selective Potential. I'm always excited when I see a blog update! Also I've been loving Kendi Every Day and June Paski.

    9. Name some of your favorite bands.

Where to begin! Lets see, currently I'm obsessed with: Paper Route, Manchester Orchestra, Sigur Ros, Iron and Wine, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Trent Dabbs, Beruit, Band of Horses, Snow Patrol, Andrew Bird, Keane, and Jimmy Eat World... just to name a few

    10. Any tips or advice for new bloggers who are trying to make their own way?

HAVE FUN! I want you to feel like a little kid playing dress up in your own closets! Keep your own style, if you only do what other people are doing, you'll lose your motivation and eventually lose your momentum. Find what your comfortable in in your own style. Don't be afraid to push your own personal envelope. Push forward! I know when I first started my blog I got a lot of (in a fun way) “beef” for it, but now those people are reading it and encouraging me every day!

If you enjoyed this post, be sure to check out my first featured blogger, Delightfully Tacky, as well!

Featured Blogger: First Edition

I'd like to introduce you (but I'm sure you already know her) to my first featured blogger, Delightfully Tacky. The reason I chose her is because she has been such a friend in this whole experience and I couldn't be happier to just know her. She has supported and helped with my blog so much from the very beginning. She has such a unique style and personality. She stands out completely from the rest. I feel like we are very similar, so if you like reading my blog, you'll love hers. So be sure to head over to Delightfully Tacky and be prepared to fall in love!

    1. Where do you see yourself blogging wise in the next 6 months, and 5 years down the road?

I really don't know. Blogging has been such an interesting venture for me, so it's hard to say where it will go. I love being able to share my inspirations and style with other people and, in turn, inspire them. I'm so glad that my blog has received such a positive response, so it really makes me want to continue it. Six months from now, I'm sure my blog will be similar to how it is now. Five years? I have no idea. It'd sure be fun to still have my blog going five years down the road. Who knows what my life will even look like by then!

    2. Where do you get inspiration for your outfits?

On some days I know exactly what I want to wear, either because I was inspired by another blogger or just because I had an idea in my mind. Other days it's like a wrestling match with my closet, trying to find something that I like. I mostly am inspired by regular people, though. I love "low" fashion, I suppose. I have an appreciation for runway styles but most of my interest and inspiration lies in what regular people wear, which is why I love browsing Chictopia, Lookbook and blogs so much.

    3. What is the ultimate goal for your blog?

I mean, wouldn't it be great to quit my job and be able to make a living blogging? Haha. No, I don't necessarily have a "goal" for it. I guess my main goal would be to reach out to people and inspire them. I love getting new followers, not because it makes me feel cooler or anything, but because I'm excited that people are inspired by Delightfully Tacky and want to come back and see more.

    4. What is another passion of yours besides fashion?

Art. Sometimes I think I should give up any sort of career and just live by the sea in an RV and make art. With a dog, of course. I love making things. People always ask me what kind of art I do and, really, it's everything. Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, music. My life would be worthless without art, I think.

    5. Have you ever been to another country? If so, where?

Obviously: Canada/Mexico. I've also been to Guatemala. I went there the summer after my senior year of high school on a mission trip. It was really interesting. We helped build an orphanage for these girls who had been rescued from prostitution and child slavery and stuff. Really moving. Puts life in perspective.

    6. How long have you been interested in fashion/style?

I started thinking about style in a different way probably two years ago. Before that I kind of had the mindset that fashion and primping were all too fussy and shallow. I also felt really uncomfortable being "out there" with my clothes, so I would only wear t-shirts and jeans. I had a style of my own but it was pretty limited. I think I finally was able to bloom, per se, when I grew out of my self-consciousness. I would 100% never wear the stuff I do now back in high school. Getting over the self-consciousness really allowed me a whole new outlook on style. It's been very fun exploring new styles now that I don't care what people think.

    7. What are some of your favorite places to shop?

Thrift and antique stores. I'll shop anywhere, really. It's just a matter of keeping my eye out for pieces that work for my wardrobe. I'm not the kind of person who walks into a store searching for a whole outfit or two. I like shopping online too, though that's mostly window shopping. I rarely get stuff from websites because I chicken out, not wanting to spend money.

    8. Do you have any tips for bloggers on blogging etiquette?

I don't know. I try to get back to my commenters, but sometimes it's hard in between daily blog reading, creating posts, and doing everything else I do during the day. Right now I barely have time to even make my own posts! I always check out new followers though. I love going to their blogs and seeing who they are. I've found a lot blogs I follow by clicking on my new followers.

    9. What's a typical daily routine for you?

Sleep sleep sleep work work work work work work work eat blog blog watch tv eat blog blog sleep sleep sleep. Clearly my social life is a force to be reckoned with.

    10. Any specific tips you have for new blogger s who want to make it in the blogging community?

Be yourself. Sounds corny, but it's always true. "Making it" is a relative term. For some it means to get hundreds of followers and comments, for me it's just knowing that people like reading and come back for more. For myself, I always like blogs that look good. It's the artist/graphic designer in me, I know, but if your blog is poorly designed, I really have a hard time reading it. Taking great self style photos is also a plus. I think it's almost as important to have good photos as it is to have great style. I mean, if your photos are trash then no one can see what your style is like anyway, right? Don't underestimate the power of imitation. Figure out why your favorite blog looks so good and imitate the layout. Find out why someone's photos look nice and try to emulate them. I always tried to emulate Rebecca's (of The Clothes Horse) photos because they were so cool. Be yourself. Blog you.

    See? Isn't she great?
